The Fusilier Museum, Bury

Two exciting opportunities have arisen to join the Fusilier Museum in Bury. The £4m HLF funded project opened in 2009 and welcomes over 20,000 visitors every year. You will be joining a successful, ambitious and close knit team.

Collections Access Officer – CAO/7/11 Part time (2.5 days per week) £10,000 p.a. (£20,000 pro rata)

You will be meticulous and methodical in you approach to collections care and enthusiastic about creating stimulating exhibition programming to encourage visitors to access and interpret the fascinating and unique objects in our collection.

Learning Officer – LO/7/11 Part time (2.5 days per week) £10,000 p.a. (£20,000 pro rata)

You will inspire the visitors and museum officers through excellent development and delivery of the formal and informal learning programme. You will be creative and passionate in your approach to education in museums.

Role: Collections Access Officer

Role in brief

The postholder will play a key role in developing and delivering an exciting exhibition programme. The role also includes responsibility for the Collections Management of a diverse and varied collection.

Hours of work: The post is 5 days a week. The post holder hours of work are usually 9.00am – 1.00pm.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for Collections Management
To manage and care for the permanent displays.
Interpreting the displayed collections to visitors
Managing the collection database. Managing the digitization of the archive collection. To be responsible for documentation to SPECTRUM Standards. Administering loans – all correspondence and loan agreements. The post-holder will research possible funding opportunities for collections-based projects.
To observe and employ best practice in all aspects of collections storage and object handling.
Responsible for all collections care at the museum
Maintain storage areas; monitoring environmental conditions, pest management and security.
Update records (electronic and paper-based) to record all object movements.
To deal with collection-based enquiries from other institutions, and members of the public
Research to improve documentation of objects
Developing and delivering the exhibition programme in conjunction with other museum staff and volunteers. Chairing Temporary Exhibitions meetings. Preparing and mounting exhibitions in the museum
To give tours and talks about the museum and its displays or temporary exhibitions to groups of adults and children when required.
To supervise volunteers undertaking a range of collections work at the museum.
Observe all Health & Safety regulations as set out by the Fusilier Museum in accordance with its statutory obligations. Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.
In addition, all employees are expected to work within the terms of their contract of employment. The Post-holder may be required to undertake other duties which may be reasonably requested by the Manager, and which are compatible with the overall scope and authority of the role.

· Qualification in history or museum studies

· Collections Management experience

Experience of object handling and object storage in a museum environment.

· Experience of Integrated Pest Management regimes.

Experience of object packing and moving.
Experience of developing temporary exhibitions
· IT knowledge

Desirable Experience:

· Delivering presentations to groups

· Used to dealing with the public in face-to face situations

The role includes managing and developing formal learning for schools and colleges, as well developing and delivering a lively and innovative informal learning programme of events linked to the collections.

Hours of work: The post is 5 days a week. The post holder hours of work are usually 9.00am – 1.00pm

Key Responsibilities:

Manage the formal learning programme – devising and developing learning sessions for school and college groups
Delivery of formal learning sessions at the museum
Developing an outreach programme with local schools
Build relationships with local schools and colleges to encourage repeat visits and a sustainable learning programme.
Deliver INSETS for teachers to introduce the work the museum can do with schools
Developing a lively and innovative informal learning programme of activities and events linked to the collections
Regularly evaluate the museum’s learning provision.
To give tours and talks about the museum and its displays or temporary exhibitions to groups of adults and children when required.
To organise the museum’s participation in national events such as The Big Draw, Museums at Night and Heritage Open Days
To organise and supervise work placements for school, college and university students.
To supervise volunteers undertaking a range of education and events work at the museum.

· IT knowledge

Able to demonstrate significant experience of working with collections and a broad range of audiences, including schools, within the museum sector.
Able to demonstrate understanding and application of national agendas and wider context when planning.
Able to understand use of data, including visitor survey information and performance data, and its use in planning future programmes.
Able to lead and collaborate with others, especially team members, casual staff and volunteers, to harness and utilise a variety of skills and knowledge.
