History : Hall Of Fame : The Duke of Wellington (Arthur Wellesley)

The Duke is famous for his victories against Napoleon. He was also famous for his commands in India but was often unfairly regarded as a 'Sepoy General', a term, which was coined by those in the army who had little regard for colonial warfare, and who often, did not understand it. His excellence as a commander and his endearing personal qualities went a long way towards gaining him the respect of his men and later in life a much-loved statesman. He commanded the Regiment in battle and made a famous speech in their honor:

"...From my own recollection, I also declare, that many of the distinguished Regiments of the British Army which I have had the honor to command, this, the best and most distinguished, is entitled to all the encomiums I have bestowed upon it. I cannot, however, conclude without earnestly recommending the officers of the Regiment, from the senior to the junior, if they wish to attain eminence or distinction in their profession, to follow the example afforded by their gallant commander."
